Mason Alexander Hawthorne and his twin brother, Spencer were born in London's East End in 1955. Their upbringing was average, at best. Their parents had little money with their father a dock worker and they barely made ends meet with their family of four children. Spencer and Mason came after the family already had a set of identical twins, their older sisters five years their senior. Spencer was a pain in the arse from a very young age. By the late sixties, he was was going on 16 and firmly involved in the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll lifestyle. He scored the gig as a roadie for the punkrock band, the Sex Pistols, by fucking one of the band's sound guys, and was in his element, having a love for rock music himself where he taught himself to play the guitar just by watching other rock groups play. It was probably a miracle he didn't drop dead of an overdose, and it was definitely an interesting mix of hard drugs that night with Randy that had him agreeing to the Embrace. He was so trashed he didn't even remember accepting, and when he re-awakened with the Daeva traits, he didn't fucking care either. He took to being a Kindred like a duck to water, and had a telegram sent home to his folks to tell them he had died of alcohol poisoning on tour.
Mason, on the other hand, was polar opposite to Spencer. He was quite and unassuming, went on a scholarship to Oxford University to study education with a dream of being a teacher. He was quiet, shy, and kindhearted, a stark contrast to his wild and wicked 'anything goes' twin. To help the family with money, Mason began working at the docks with his father around the time Spencer hit the hard drugs and rock lifestyle. The twins loved each other unconditionally, but Mason never knew how to accept Spencer's wild lifestyle and worried incessantly that he would be harmed by it and he would lose his twin forever. It was just after Spencer hit the road with the band that Mason fell ill with leukemia where his health went downhill very rapidly, and he was given six months to live. By the time Spencer was in America, Mason was hospitalised and wanted to be the one to tell Spencer what was wrong, so he chose to wait until Spencer made it back to London before delivering that bad news on person.
However, Spencer would never make it home. He was Embraced, choosing to stay in America with his Sire, Miranda (Randy) Hart, and when his family received the telegram telling them he had died from alcohol poisoning, Mason gave up completely on his fight for his life, not being able to go on without his twin. With Spencer's newly piqued Kindred senses and the twin connection he already had with his brother, he began to feel something was seriously wrong with Mason. As a childer, he began losing control, knowing deep inside that Mason's life was on the line and he became obsessed with getting to London to have his brother Embraced to save him. The dilemma was that Mason most definitely was not Daeva material. At all. He was even still a virgin, saving himself for when he got married, studious, shy, bashful and kind. So Spencer went straight to Greg Kent, a close friend of Randy, pleading with him to come to London to Embrace his brother into the Ventrue Clan. Mason wasn't a leader by any means, but he had the ambition and focus to fit a Ventrue. It was the only course Spencer had, and knowing Greg would understand having had to Embrace his own brother to say his life.
When they got to London and to the hospital, Mason was unconscious and on life support. Spencer felt like his whole world was crushed discovering his twin was dying from cancer. He hit a frenzy and almost Embraced Mason himself in a panic, but luckily Greg's lover, Xavier Carlisle, had accompanied them on the trip, so he was able to hold Spencer back while Greg got the job done. Though, once again, Xavier wiped Greg's memory of the horrific result of feeding from tainted blood of a dying person to Embrace them. When Mason re-awoke, having been taken against his will, he was furious and out of control. He was a danger to himself and others, but they brought him back to New York with them, and Greg spent a lot of time with him teaching him and helping him understand the ways of The Masquerade. Slowly but surely, he began to return to the kindhearted and placid person he was, a strong contrast to most Kindred. He was very much one of the more unique Kindred in that once he got control, he kept a massive portion of his human side.
These days, where Spencer is a slutty rockstar in his element, Mason lives more of a quiet life. They share a large loft apartment together in SoHo that's big enough for them to be close but have plenty of their own personal space. He loved teaching, having just began a job as a teacher a year before he fell ill, but the daytime hours were impossible for him as a Kindred. Instead, he went on to study a degree in Psychology and he now works as a counsellor and therapist for patients battling cancer, along with working with the Cancer Foundation to raise money for cancer research. He has an evening private practice and also makes evening visits to the hospital to counsel his more severely ill patients. He is as content as he can be and one of the most humane Kindred of their inner circle, having maintained his kindhearted and placid nature in the wake of his Embrace.
Within a vampire bloodline known as The Kindred, seven vampire clans are collectively joined, forming the largest sect of vampires called the Camarilla, and survive through the Masquerade, disguising themselves as humans. Camarilla policy is that vampires should try to fit in with and hide from the rest of humanity, as to easily feed on them. For this reason, they created a web of lies and misinformation, called the Masquerade, to make the public believe that supernatural beings like vampires could not possibly exist. The Camarilla also believes that the only way the vampire species can survive in these modern nights is if it unite. Any breach of the Masquerade by any vampire risks exposing the entire race. Both viewpoints are fundamentally opposed by the Sabbat, an opposing sect to the Camarilla. The Camarilla also enforces the Eldest as ruling class over the younger vampires. The seven clans of the Camarilla are Ventrue, Brujah, Malkavian, Toreador, Gangrel, Tremere and Nosferatu. When a human is turned by a Kindred vampire, it is known as the Embrace, the vampire siring the human to embrace them into their own bloodline.
Each city has a ruler, a "Prince" who enforces the laws of The Masquerade that govern them to protect their anonymity. A clan is a group of vampires "related" by blood; i.e. the vampiric equivalent of an extended family or lineage. A clan is usually a large group, acknowledged widely in the vampiric society. Each clan nurture their own characteristics and traits, and each clan has its strengths and weaknesses. Often the clans do not always get along with certain clans such as the Brujah and the Ventrue actually hating one another. Each clan within a given area has a representative, a Primogen, who is usually the eldest and most powerful member of the clan, who attends the leader or prince's advisory council. This status also grants the character social advantages and greater power than being a normal member of their clan.

The Ventrue are the rulers, leaders and politicos of the Camarilla, sometimes known as the Patrician Clan or the Kingship Clan. In Ancient Rome, they were generals and warlords of the Empire, and in the Dark Ages, they were knights and barons, leading crusades and conquests. In modern times the Ventrue still have great ambition and see themselves as conquerors, but their ways have changed, using courts and companies instead of feifdoms and mighty armies. Targets for Embrace by the Ventrue have always been people in positions of power, whether these people were aristocracy or company CEOs. The Ventrue perceive themselves as the most powerful of the vampiric clans thanks to their wealth, social influence, and powers over the thoughts and feelings of mortals. The clan as a whole is typified as conservative, be it in actions or customs. The Ventrue have their own nigh-inviolable code of etiquette. The clan's Elders have been known to punish violations of these unwritten rules with greater ferocity and resolve than the Traditions of the Camarilla.
The Ventrue claim that ruling vampires is their duty, their burden, a task which is interlocked with their fate. The reality is that excessive pride and ambition seem a more convenient explanation as to why they strive to expand their already vast influence and assert themselves over other Kindred. They tend to be politicians, businessmen, military officers, crime lords, important members of powerful religions, sects and cults. In response to what they perceive as a degeneration of the clan from its noble roots, a smaller segment of the clan has forsworn their ties to the Camarilla to join the Sabbat as antitribu. They believe that greed has led the body of the clan astray from its previous glory, so their quest is for righteous military and tyrannical power over other Kindred to reestablish what they believe to be the proper order. The Camarilla Ventrue casually dismiss their antitribu cousins as idealists doomed to failure. Both Ventrue and Ventrue antitribu refer to themselves as the sole "true" heirs of the name.
In comparison to the other vampiric clans, the Ventrue are considered to be especially particular about whose blood they drink. In fact, any given Ventrue can only drink blood from a specific kind of mortal, or from mortals under a specific sort of circumstance. Some may only prey upon a given ethnicity, while others can only feed from humans of a certain occupation or even religion. Some Ventrue can only find nourishment from blood that carries a more rarefied quality such as anger, fear or innocence. Regardless of the sort of blood the Ventrue requires, other blood is regurgitated or simply cannot be swallowed. They may feed from other Kindred with no such restriction. Ventrue prefer to view this flaw as a matter of refined tastes. Of course, with the power (both supernatural and temporal) most Ventrue possess, few go hungry.
